At Singleton, we are very proud and excited to have our very own bespoke Growth Curriculum, developed to reflect our vision and location and up to date research, reading and experience.

However, beyond our Growth Curriculum and National Curriculum we offer a wealth of opportunities to enable children to fully 'flourish' and be brilliant citizens for the future.

Forest School and Outdoor Learning

Research shows that learning in the natural environment has a positive impact on children's engagement with learning as well as their physical and mental health. We are very blessed to have the most AMAZING outdoor environment on our doorstep.  Lessons are led by both an external provider and our own forest school teacher, Miss Cain.

We have a shelter on the school field, which will enable lessons to be taught outside in a very different environment.

We are also fortunate to have access to two external Forest School sites. The first, at the top of Levin Down, is a well-established woodland that provides children with opportunities for exploration, problem-solving, risk-taking and hands-on outdoor learning.

Our second site is a newly planted woodland that the children helped to create. Although still developing, it gives children the opportunity to monitor, manage and care for the site, helping them to understand how woodlands grow and how we can support and protect the natural environment.

Rocking Reading 

We want every child to develop a love of reading and to recognise its value beyond their daily Guided Reading lessons. Our Woodland Library provides a unique and inviting space where children can explore and enjoy books each week. Volunteers support our youngest readers to build strong early reading habits and confidence, while others work with children who may benefit from additional support or greater challenge through discussion and book talk.

Each class explores an Author of the Half Term, helping children to discover a wide range of writers and texts. Wherever possible, we connect directly with authors through video calls, emails and letters, bringing books to life and inspiring a love of reading. We also embrace national events and initiatives such as World Book Day, the Summer Reading Challenge and Bookfest, all of which help to reinforce our belief that at Singleton, reading rocks! 

Tapping into Talents

The children in Year 3 and 4 have the opportunity to explore the many talents which they or those in our community have. By 'tapping into talents' it is our intention to enable children to learn from others, increase self-esteem, open doors to new experiences, support children to maximise opportunities and encourage children to build lives with a sense of purpose, fun and positive wellbeing.

Primary Futures

The children in Year 5 and 6 have the opportunity in the second half of the Summer term to explore the world of careers and work skills. Primary Futures is an organisation which helps primary schools to link to a wide variety of careers and possibilities. It is our intention to broaden children's horizons, challenge stereotypes and raise aspirations.  We want children to see how their education now is central to their future tomorrow. 

Pupil Responsibilities

Across the school ALL children are expected to contribute to their class community. We also look for opportunities for our pupils to contribute to the wider school community. It is our intention for children to see how they can positively impact the lives of others through simple responsibilities. For example, reception children are expected to maintain the front entrance of school with sweeping and gardening, whilst our Year 6 children are expected to lead the House Team meetings. 

Cool to be Kind Week

Every Autumn there is a national Anti-Bullying week. We are keen to flip this narrative. Whilst we acknowledge children need to know how to identify, prevent and stand up to bullying, we also want children to know the power of kindness.  During this week,  the school will be on high alert for community members displaying kindness. 

Worship and Assemblies for Families

Across the year there are opportunities for families to gather as a community to celebrate and worship together. 

Music and Singing 

The children across the school may take part in peripatetic music lessons, paid for by families. We currently have children learning the recorder, guitar and piano. Each summer the musicians will showcase their progress for families. 

We love to sing! We have taken part in a variety of singing opportunities both within school (Carol Singing for the community) , in our Partnership ( Summer sing-a-long) and outside school (United Voices). These rich opportunities for our children to perform are a vital part of their holistic development. 

Reaching into our Community 

As part of our planning, the team will look for opportunities within each theme to make community links. In 2026 we held our first joint Summer Fair 'Singlefest' which has a glorious festival feel with food, entertainment, games and of course a wonderful raffle!

Our Slippers and Stories sessions bring together children and residents from local nursing homes to share stories, games and conversation. These special visits help build confidence, communication skills and empathy, while fostering valuable intergenerational friendships. We are also delighted to welcome our visitors to nativities and other performances, helping them to remain an important part of our school community.

Courageous Advocacy

Following Easter, children take part in our Courageous Advocacy Circles, working with their next year's teacher and a new group of peers. Together, they explore issues they feel are unfair or unjust and learn how they can make a positive difference. Through research, campaigning, fundraising and practical action, children develop the confidence to stand up for others and contribute to positive change in their community and beyond.

Partnership School

Although we know that children from small rural schools transition to secondary school very successfully, we also recognise the value of building friendships beyond our own setting. Through partnership events such as site swaps, joint educational visits, nurture activities and a shared Year 6 celebration, children have opportunities to socialise with peers from Boxgrove and develop confidence ahead of their move to high school.

Trips, Visitors and Residential

Across the year children in all classes will experience trips and visits to enhance the curriculum. In October our Year 5 and 6 children went to Cobnor for their residential. This is bi-annual event, and is rotated with a 'camp in school' event and team building activities at a local provider. 

This year the children have made visits to the Weald and Downland Museum, the cities of Brighton, Chichester and  Portsmouth, West Dean Gardens, and the Titanic Museum.

We also welcome visitors into school to enhance all aspects of the Growth and wider curriculum.
